About Inside Broadway
Message From Our President
1982: a great, spectacular musical direct from London was about to make its New York premiere. The Winter Garden Theatre was being reconfigured to look like a cats’ junkyard and the ballad “Memory” was among the pop hits of the day.
40 years ago, Bernard Jacobs, president of The Shubert Organization, asked me to create a student ticket program with the musical Cats. Through this program, 50 tickets to the Wednesday matinee performance of Cats were to be distributed each week to New York City public high schools. This began my journey in creating what eventually became Inside Broadway. The Cats ticket program miraculously ran the entire length of the show’s New York engagement, 18 and a half years. From this initial program developed the present day Inside Broadway organization.
Over these 40 years, we were privileged to develop the video Broadway Backstage, the Cats funbook, the 1988 educational lecture tour to the Soviet Union, our Shakespeare Connection program with England’s Royal Shakespeare Company, our Equity touring productions which have ranged from Smokey Joe’s Café to You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and our popular Creating the Magic program, which has shown students how the magic of Broadway is created.
This year, we are honored to celebrate our organization’s 40-year history, which has brought the magic of Broadway and live theatre into the lives of New York City’s public school students. By a rough estimate, over 3 million children have participated in our various program activities in these 40 years.
Below I have selected an article from our archive that provides a historical story of our fabulous history. As you move through our website, we are pleased to present not only our history, but also our current programs.
I hope you will have an opportunity to participate with us in this anniversary year. We are excited to continue our mission of providing historic live theatre to New York’s public schools.
Here’s to the next 40 years!
