About Inside Broadway

Message From Executive Director, Michael Presser

It is with great pride and pleasure that I welcome you to Inside Broadway's 38th Season.

Inside Broadway is celebrating 38 years of introducing New York City public school students to the magic and excitement of live theater. Our workshops, residencies and performances bring the Broadway experience annually to over 80,000 children in over 90 schools throughout the five boroughs of our city. Broadway is an important American art form and one of the major tourist destinations for visitors to our city. Our arts and education programs not only bring the Broadway experience directly to the city’s schools, but also help to develop the audiences of the future.

Within this site you will find information on the various programs and activities that we operate. It’s also a great learning tool for what is happening in arts and education in the public schools and on Broadway.

I urge you to discover our organization and as always, we welcome your comments and suggestions.

Our Mission

Inside Broadway is a professional New York City based children’s theatre company committed to producing Broadway’s classic musicals in a contemporary light for young audiences. Our aim is to pass down the rich legacy of America’s musical theatre to future generations so that the magic, music, and universal themes of the genre are not lost, but rediscovered and made relevant for today’s youth.

Each year over 80,000 New York City students in over 90 schools throughout the five boroughs attend performances of our Equity theatre company and participate in theatre arts workshops. Our school workshop program is conducted by a staff of professional teaching artists and meets the New York State Standards for the Arts, Social Studies and English Language Arts. We also meet the New York City Department of Education Blueprint for Theatre Arts.

Our History

Now celebrating our 38th year, Inside Broadway was created in 1982 as a free ticket program at the invitation of the late Bernard Jacobs, President of the Shubert Organization. During the entire Broadway run of CATS, the Shubert Organization provided Inside Broadway with 50 tickets to every Wednesday matinee performance. These tickets were given to NYC’s under-served public school students. Throughout the years we have produced professional tours of classic Broadway musicals directly to school auditoriums throughout the city. Popular productions have been Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies, Smokey Joe’s Café, R&H’s Cinderella, You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, Bye Bye, Birdie and Kiss Me, Kate. Inside Broadway is one of the few children’s theatre companies that is dedicated to using live musicians in their productions. Michael Presser has been the Executive Director of Inside Broadway since its beginning.

Inside Broadway annually serves over 80,000 throughout the five boroughs through our in-class residency programs, after school workshops and our popular Creating the Magic series. Students who participate in our hands-on theatre residency programs work directly with a theatre professional to build a musical that can be proudly performed for their friends, family and school community. Creating the Magic is a unique careers-in-theatre seminar that focuses on all of the important careers that are available on Broadway both onstage and backstage. Presented three times a year in collaboration with a Broadway musical at a Broadway Theatre, this program brings students to the heart of Times Square for an unforgettable experience that only Inside Broadway can provide.

All of our educational programs leave a lasting impression on young New Yorkers and help to develop an audience for the future.
